The Belgian Air Transport Association started in 1977 as a vereniging zonder winstoogmerk / association sans but lucratif  (non-profit organization), originally merely meant to represent the Belgian airlines, other then the then Sabena, in the joint industrial committee (paritair comité / comité paritaire).  From 1977 until the early 90s, BATA was presided by Mr Tony Vangrieken, Director-General of Delta Air Transport. Under the impulse of Johan Vanneste, when the latter was with Delta Air Transport, BATA grew into a broader industry federation, focusing on public affairs in general for the Belgian airlines.
